Gameplay

Beat the Odds was a pilot for a revival of the old '60s game show.

Two contestants competed to make words to random letters. One player calls "stop" to a randomly "spinning" wheel with two letters and a number between them. When the wheels stop, there is a letter to the left, which the word must start with. There is a letter to the right, which is what the word must end with with. In the middle is a number, which is the amount of letters the word must have, unless it's underlined, then it must be exactly that many letters. The first player to buzz in with a word gets $100 and control. At any time however, a Whammy may show up (no, not the furry red creature, a blue lightning bolt), and take all their money. When a player is in control and has more than $100, it starts to become more of a risk. The player in control sets the amount of the word, up to how much they have on their score. It also becomes a risk because their opponent may have more and setting the value too high could be risky. They may "freeze" their score at any time if they're afraid the Whammy will show up and no money will be in danger up to that value, but they lose control. A player may freeze up to two times in a game. Also at any time, a player may "challenge" the word, if it's an illegal word or doesn't fit the criteria (the source for words was the same as the ABC version of Password, Dr. Robert Stockwell). A correct challenge loses the person who answered $100. An incorrect challenge loses $100 for the challenger. If a player had frozen and lost $100, the freeze was now lost and the money wasn't safe to the Whammy. The first player to $1000 wins the game, and the first to win 2 games wins the match and goes to the bonus game.

Bonus Game

In the bonus game, the player had 60 seconds to identify 10 words from definitions read by Chuck (the clock ticking sound later could be heard on Wheel of Fortune in the bonus round). The first and last letter were give and every word was 5 letters, and if a player passed they could come back to that word later. Each word was worth $100, getting all 10 would win $5000.

My review

Good concept, but a bit repetitive after awhile. Games could last awhile too if the Whammy hit you too often. The game could really drag sometimes. It's funny seeing Chuck Henry host, as 15 long years later, he'd make his hosting debut on Now You See It. He does a pretty good job.
